Buy Antique and Historic Stock and Bond Certificates Online

Just exactly what is Scripophily?

Never heard of scripophily?  Well no need to worry.  It is a very new term, it’s only been around since the early seventies.  Well, at least recognized as a hobby since then.

And by the way, it is a made up word so it may or may not be in your dictionary.  The first half of it – scrip – is an english word that means or shows ownership by a receipt or certificate.  The second half of the word phil is Greek and has the meaning love or loving.

So these people are loving ownership and they collect as much ownership as they can.  They are collectors, not bill collectors, but hobby enthusiast. They collect stock and bond certificates that no longer are valid.  In short, Scripophily is the study and collection of obsolete stocks and bonds.

The expired paper, however, is valuable to the collector.  The value depends on many things such as the recent Dot Com companies, old companies long out of business, old stocks from big blue chip companies,  condition of the certificate, age, historical significance, signatures, rarity, demand for item, aesthetics, type of company, original face value, bankers associated with issuance, transfer stamps, cancellation markings, issued or unissued, printers, and type of engraving process , companies that have been around for decades, the theme or picture or vignette on the certificate, who issued the certificate, who owned the certificate, the autograph and so on.

Today this new hobby, Scripophily is set to take off as thousands are starting to join in and get a little bit of history that they may have been around for.  The time is now to join since prices are still very cheap. Where else could you get an 150 year old antique in perfect condition for under $50.00?

There are many reasons that contribute to the success of this hobby. First of all, it is a worldwide collectible since almost all countries of the world have issued stocks and/or bonds through their governments or businesses. Each certificate is a different piece of history

Miss out on the gold market, coffee futures, the DotCom rush, McDonald’s stock?  Well now you can still participate and still make good investments while this hobby is still in its infancy, so to speak.  And this time you can invest from all around the world where bond and stock certificates where sold for whatever reason.  The hobby of Scripophily is one of the most fascinating areas of financial history and is considered a specialized field of numismatics.

So don’t throw away grandpa’s old, worthless, expired stock and bond certificates they could have more value than you might think possible.  Oh, if you have already decorated the walls in a room in your house with them.. well, uh…don’t know how to help you there.

Scripophily is more than just collecting another piece of paper. It is collecting history. It is something everyone from all ages and all parts of the world can enjoy. The more you see, the more you collect, the more you appreciate that stocks and bonds were the monetary fabric that built the world as we know it today.
